How Many Dice Do You Need for D&D?
Short answer: one seven-dice set is enough to play D&D. It holds one of each die the game uses: D4, D6, D8, D10, D00 (the percentile die), D12 and D20.
Longer answer: most players end up wanting a little more. Some spells and weapons roll several of the same die at once, and rolling eight D6 one at a time slows the game down. Here is how to build up, one step at a time.
Start with one set
One full set covers every roll in the game. Pick one you can read easily, since you will be reading it every few minutes.
Add a second set
A second set means you can roll attack and damage together, or roll advantage with two D20s at once. Many players pick a second set in a contrasting color so they can tell the two apart.
Extra D6s and D20s
Spells like Fireball roll 8d6, and sneak attacks pile up D6s as a rogue levels. A pile of extra D6s, or a third set, keeps big rolls quick. Rolling with advantage or disadvantage uses two D20s, which a second set already covers.
A tray and a bag
A dice tray keeps rolls on the table and off the floor, and a bag keeps your sets together between sessions. Neither is required, but both make game night smoother.
